Playa del Carmen is a city on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, in the northeast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It's located approximately 45 minutes south of Cancun on the Mayan Riviera.
Tourism to Playa del Carmen began with the passenger ferry service to Cozumel, an island across the Cozumel Channel and world famous scuba diving destination. While passing through, many people realized that it was a nice place to relax away from the crowds of Cancun but with the same quality beaches and turquoise waters.
5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida) is the main tourist thoroughfare in Playa del Carmen. It is a pedestrian only, cobblestone lined street which spans approximately 20 blocks. Along 5th Avenue you will find a variety of restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping opportunities and various services. In Playa del Carmen, nearly everything starts from this street.
There are a lot of attractions in Playa del Carmen's neighbourhood, some of the best are the Maya ruins of Tulum and Coba, the white sand beaches and snorkeling on Cozumel island.
Playa del Carmen has a sub-tropical climate. The annual average temperature is about 27C or 80F.
